Seriously.it doesn t get much better than this book My daughters are 3 and 4 years old and I am currently in nursing school This is an incredible look into how our bodies work without being so dumbed down that it s silly or so complex that you have trouble following I don t always read it word for word when we sit down to look it over, but the illustrations are magnificent and really hit the ideas home My older daughter definitely understands certain concepts well beyond her age, like the fact that there are good germs and bad She realizes that sometimes our bodies react or over react to things it thinks are bad and some people have allergies She is definitely my little study buddy I love that I can foster her interest in science and biology with things like this I would have loved to have had this as a kid One of my favorite little gems is that the skeleton that brings us on the journey is shown to be female at the end My daughter got a real kick out of that and it really opened doors to talking about how we re all the same on the inside People are often surprised to learn that I used this book to teach my sons about the reproductive system The beauty of it is that it talks about ALL the systems of the body, so when we got to the chapter on reproduction, it was no taboo than the fact you have a skeleton, or blood, or even that you pee and poop It makes puberty and human reproduction a very normal part of human development, as it should be I read it to my kids when they were young 3 5 and they read it independently now that they are older They don t bat an eye when they have family life at school, unlike some of their peers who are shocked or embarrassed Hands down, this is the best child friendly book for introducing the reproductive system because it normalizes and de stigmatizes it. My 4 year old daughter loves this book At this age, she doesn t understand everything yet, but she still loves to have it read to her and loves the pictures Sometimes we go through a chapter a night I was surprised how big and detailed this book is For some reason I thought it would be a thin book that just covered the high level basics This book is actually about an inch thick and goes into a lot of detail while still explaining things in easy to understand language Even I m learning new things as I read it to my daughter I love that this is helping my daughter develop an interest in how the human body works I ve recommended this book to several friends One friend said her 2nd grader loves it and will sit there and read it on his own. We really love this book and it s approach My degree is in Biology so I tend to collect all the cool science books for my children I will warn for those that are unaware that they do talk about puberty periods, erections, ejaculation etc but leave out the actual sex act My kids already had this chat quite early on so they don t even blink an eye to things like this, but I thought it was worth noting for those who have never seen the book in person.
