Epidemic (Eyewitness Guides) More than my son wanted to know about diseases, but definitely worth the read We both completely enjoyed the book Produced In Association With The American Museum Of Natural History, Who Have Recently Produced The World Of Infectious Diseases Exhibition Epidemic , This Book Aimed At Young People, Explores Topics From Social History To People S Behaviour Patterns I love these kind of books and this one is wonderful like all the rest Very informative and educational I would recommend these books to anyone. great info My children love this book They ve learned about several rather horrible diseases and about how their own immune system works Although I wouldn t recommend it for the faint of heart, I ve found that the young ones are prepared to accept a lot of things that I might personally find disturbing For instance, the antique sputum cup pictured on the TB page My son loves the pictured models of the actual viruses, bacteria and parasites, and has now incorporated all of them into his own little imaginary world Yes, it is embarrassing when your five year old yells out in Wal Mart, Mommy, I m going to be E Coli now, ok There are two page spreads for most of the main epidemics from the past, from the Black Death to HIV AIDS Several pages also deal specifically with how your white blood cells defend your body The text is divided into chunks and always associated with bright colored pictures that aren t cartoony at all, but very realistic. All in all, a very worthwhile purchase We checked it out from the library so many times, that I decided it would make sense to own our own copy, and we haven t regretted the decision at all. I m a physician and I hold a Master s in Public Health I bought this book for my kids, along with several other DK titles This is a great overview of the subject and covers the history of epidemiology in a wonderfully straight forward and very complete manner In fact, I keep a copy in my office to loan to my non medical colleagues for a fast and highly readable overview of this fascinating subject Grade School, High School, College or Post Bach, what ever your educational level, I don t think you ll be disappointed with this very neat book
