Disarming Scripture: Cherry-Picking Liberals, Violence-Loving Conservatives, and Why We All Need to Learn to Read the Bible Like Jesus Did A GOD OF LOVE AND GENOCIDE For Many Christians The Problem Of Violence Of Scripture Can Result In A Crisis Of Faith Especially When We See How Such Passages Have Been Used Throughout History To Justify Horrific Bloodshed In God S Name Moving Beyond Typical Conservative And Liberal Approaches, Which Seek To Either Defend Or Whitewash Over Violence In The Bible, Disarming Scripture Takes A Surprising Yet Compelling Approach Learning To Read The Bible Like Jesus DidAlong The Way The Book Deals With Some Very Big Issues, Ranging From Passages Commanding Genocide And Infanticide In The Old Testament To Passages In The New Testament That Have Been Used To Justify Slavery, Child Abuse, And State Violence The Take Away Is An Approach To Scripture That Not Only Sees Questioning As An Acceptable Part Of A Healthy Faith, But As An Absolutely Essential Part Of It An interesting perspective on Scripture, although the hyperbole of the sub title does it no favours It is unashamedly liberal, but doesn t dodge the difficult passages and offers an interesting if incomplete critique of Miroslav Volf s underpinning theology of justice deferred Certainly his apocalyptic of peace deserves consideration, even if I believe it cannot be fully supported except by importing 21st century s into our exegesis, thus violating the principle articulated in the previously mentioned sub title His exegetical heuristic is, however worth applying to other issues that are currently causing contemporary anxst in the church eg sexuality etc and whilst this method will win no conservative plaudits, I applaud his core theses that faith is not about certainty, and that a commitment to truth is not about claiming to possess absolute truth but allowing truth to posses us. Having read other books like this I found this one to be helpful I still had questions which this book helped me with Well worth it If you have questions about the God of the old testament this will help a lot Highly recommend. Great book
